Secret of Luke Skywalker’s Severed Head

Amid his Jedi preparing in The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker has a dream of overcoming Darth Vader by cutting his neck with a lightsaber — just to understand that the beheaded head in the protective cap is his own. The Dagobah hollow scene (watch it underneath), which foretells the uncover that Vader is Luke's dad, still stands as a standout amongst the most stunning minutes in any Star Wars film. Furthermore, on account of performing artist Mark Hamill, we now know why that disjoined head looked so frightfully genuine.

You might ask yourself, how was Mark Hamill ready to remain underneath the floor of the Dagobah swamp set? That specific set was strange in that it was intended to suit the Yoda manikin. Puppeteer Frank Oz and his group needed to work from beneath, so extensive parts of the marsh set were hoisted off the ground. Only an informed theory, however it appears to be likely that the Yoda setup was what permitted Mark Hamill to cover up beneath the floor while the camera zoomed in on his smoking head.

Concerning the rejected prop head, it was sent into capacity at the Lucasfilm Archive — as confirm by the video underneath, which demonstrates enhancements cosmetics craftsman and Star Wars fan William Forsche playing with Luke Skywalker's head in the late 1980s. Some way or another, I don't think they let guests to Skywalker Ranch do this any longer.
